We care for nature, so nature can care for you.
Andrea Mackenzie Announces Her Departure
After 15 years of dedication to the Open Space Authority, Andrea Mackenzie announced that she plans to step down as the agency's general manager at the end of 2026. Under her leadership, the authority has doubled its conservation footprint across Santa Clara Valley, growing from approximately 12,000 protected acres of natural and working lands, watersheds and wildlife habitat to almost 30,000 acres.
Click the image above to watch a 2023 video of Andrea Mackenzie reflecting on the importance of building a strong internal culture at the Open Space Authority and working collaboratively with partners to protect nature for generations to come.
Coyote Valley Battery Storage Project Terminated
The energy company AES has canceled its plans to build the Jewelflower Battery Energy Storage project in Coyote Valley. While the Open Space Authority strongly supports clean energy across California, these types of projects must be built in proper locations.Given the extraordinary conservation values, as well as the significant public investment and public support for protection of Coyote Valley, we believe AES made the right decision to not pursue a facility in Coyote Valley.

Local Crews Stop Malech Fire
On August 8, a 32-acre wildfire broke out near Malech Road. The fire spread onto parts of Máyyan 'Ooyákma – Coyote Ridge Open Space Preserve, prompting a temporary closure. Thanks to rapid response from Santa Clara County Fire, CalFire Santa Clara Unit and San Jose Fire Department, firefighters contained the blaze quickly. The fire's impact was also greatly reduced thanks to routine spring cattle grazing.Read more about the fire here.
Construction at Coyote Valley Continues!
