On the heels of a successful year in local conservation, connecting communities to nature and building climate resilience, the Open Space Authority has released the 2024 Impact Report, highlighting our biggest accomplishments over the last calendar year. Farming Saffron in Coyote Valley

In September 2024, the Open Space Authority leased a one-acre plot of farmland in Coyote Valley to Wasim Sahibzada, a fourth-generation saffron farmer from Kashmir, India. By November 2024, Wasim witnessed his first blooms of the Crocus sativus, the flower that contains the delicate and valuable red threads or stamen known as saffron. A Match Made in Nature: A Volunteer Love Story

Ileana Culcea and Peter Takács are proof that nature can bring people together in the most beautiful way. After first meeting at an Open Space Authority volunteer event, their connection grew into a friendship and eventually blossomed into a romantic relationship. Fisher's Bend Restoration Area, Coyote Valley

Join us to help maintain recent plantings at Fisher's Bend Restoration Area in Coyote Valley! Together, we'll complete some maintenance around the restoration area and get a head start on spring weeding at established plantings along Fisher Creek, an important corridor for wildlife movement in Coyote Valley. Whether you lost someone yesterday or years ago, sometimes the best thing to do is just be with people who understand. Come take a gentle walk with us and begin to heal in nature at this beautiful location. Join us for a series of low impact, low social pressure and healing nature experiences every Wednesday in February. Talking about your loss is optional and everyone is welcome. Help restore a habitat in Coyote Valley!

Roll up your sleeves to help nature! For this second Land Stewards event in February, we'll be providing some much-needed TLC in a native plant restoration area along Fisher Creek in Coyote Valley. Our efforts to maintain the native plantings will improve habitat for pollinators, birds and other wildlife that use Fisher Creek as a wildlife highway. Sign up to be a volunteer here!

STARRY NIGHTS

Rancho Cañada del Oro Open Space Preserve 

Join the Open Space Authority and the San Jose Astronomical Association (SJAA) for a star party at Rancho Cañada del Oro Open Space Preserve! Docent astronomers will set up their telescopes to help you get the most knowledge and enjoyment out of the dark starry night sky. Lunar New Year, otherwise known as Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival, is a two-week celebration that kicks off the start of the new year based on the lunisolar calendar. Each new year is symbolized by one of 12 Chinese zodiac signs which were used as the initial method to count years, months, days and hours in the calendar. This year, we celebrate the Year of the Snake!

In honor of International Day of Women and Girls in Science on February 11, the Open Space Authority is highlighting seven female-identifying staff members who have past or current experience in the fields of Science, Technology, Math and Engineering (STEM). Open Space Authority Awarded $250k from CalOES
In December, the Open Space Authority was awarded a $250,000 grant from the California Governor's Office of Emergency Services (CalOES) to be used for hardware and services that better protect the agency from cybersecurity threats. Click here to learn more about the award.
