There will be stops along the way to talk about plants and wildlife. Please bring water, sunscreen, and/or a hat. We hope to see you there!

Join the Open Space Authority in partnership with the San Jose Astronomical Association (SJAA) for an evening out under the stars. The gates will be closed at 9:30 p.m. to allow for better, undisturbed viewing. Please arrive before 9:30 p.m. Please dress warm, bring water to drink, and your sense of wonder for the night sky. Space is limited and registration is required.
Take a tour of Coyote Valley Open Space Preserve and learn about the South Valley Meadow Restoration Project. Visitors will walk to the edge of the meadow to see it up close, hear how the restoration was completed, and then take a 2-mile hike up the trail to the overlook for a better view from above. Families are welcome for this event. Please register by the number of cars coming, not attendees. Wet conditions will cancel.
Plein Air is simply painting outdoors, and we invite you to join us for a picturesque morning of painting out in the preserve. No experience necessary and we provide all the materials! Our guest artists will show you some techniques and set you free to paint to your heart’s content. You will have the opportunity to meet local watercolor artists and receive guidance on painting the beautiful landscapes at Rancho Cañada del Oro. The event will last 3 hours, and participants will be able to take their painting home with them. Please arrive promptly at 10 a.m. Registration is required for this event.
Come observe this beautiful preserve as day moves into night. As you hike this 4-mile trail, you will see and hear the changes that occur as some animals go to sleep and others come alive. Please bring a flashlight for when it gets dark, water, and a snack. Dress in layers for when it gets cool after sunset at 8:18 pm.
Please join us for a family picnic in the park! This program is designed specifically for toddlers and youth with their families and children of all ages are welcome. For our younger guests, there will be a toddler walk along the meadow's edge with educational activities and storytelling. For older children, there will be a 1-mile hike up to a scenic overlook. Both groups will meet back in the meadow and are invited to bring a picnic and join us under the trees for lunch. This event is limited by parking for 35 cars. Please register by the number of cars coming, not attendees.
Be Prepared
The best day in open space is one where everyone has what they need to enjoy themselves. Dress in layers for a range of weather conditions and carry water. Pack snacks or lunch, especially if enjoying nature with children. Bring a hat, sunblock and a simple first aid kit. Equestrians and cyclists should also plan for the care and maintenance of their transportation. Please check our website ahead in case of rain, as events may be cancelled.
